I was doing a bit of spring cleaning this past weekend and came across some of my son’s jerseys that I have taken away over the years. I did not take them away because of anything that he had done but more that I did not want him wearing a jersey of someone who was a terrible role model for him. Believe me, I am not being the hyper, crazy parent who does not have a grip on what the world is like these days, I took them away when the celebrity athlete was convicted of murder, assault or using drugs. I think that is pretty reasonable. My son still has plenty of jerseys of great athletes that he can aspire to be…I am not worried. It seems for boys there are a plethora that we can help our boys pick and choose from. But what about our girls? As mothers, aunts, grandmothers and sisters, we are our girls’ rocks, the people that they truly look to for guidance and to help them understand who they are and should be. It’s inevitable though that they will also look beyond us to pop culture to find a person to look up to. What star athletes and/or celebrities are out there for them? It seems to be a much smaller pool that they might choose to emulate. So when I read yesterday that Taylor Swift was “ ‘fine’ with not being ‘overtly sexy, ‘” it was refreshing. It was nice to see that a celebrity did not feel that they had to be a sex object to be popular. I grew up in the Madonna era and I am sure that my parents were less than thrilled when I would sit in the back of the car singing “Like a Virgin” at the top of my lungs. Not to mention that MTV videos were a sex education unto themselves. So although one can debate whether or not celebrities need to act a particular way or take responsibility for their actions because of the kids that look up to them, I appreciate Taylor Swift’s recognition that she is a role model for many girls out there and choosing to be herself. I love that she stated, “I’m a lot of things. Overtly sexy is not one of them. I’m fine. I’m fine with all the other things I am.” As she should be. To me she has proven that she is a true rock star on many levels.
