Make them Count!

Posted on General, Parenting August 11, 2017 by Mary George

As the days wind down to the first day of school, let’s make the most of the last days of summer with our children. Here are a few tips and tools to guide you to a wonderful start to the school year!

1. Tech Free family dinner – all devices go in a basket and assign a role to each child to help prep a fun dinner together.  Kids can come up with the menu, help cook, set the table and start the conversation with…

“What is your least favorite thing about technology / devices?”

“What is your favorite?”

2. Spend some “Quality Time” – Ask your child for their idea of quality time with you and try to do it together before school starts.  Is it throwing a football, going for a bike ride or walk, cooking together or playing a board game? Often times our child’s version of quality time is simple, honest and real!

3. Conversation starters for meal times…

“How were you brave today?”

“How were you kind?”

“How were you a good friend?”

“Did anything make you worry or feel nervous.”

“What made you laugh today?”

4. Set School Year Goals – We always think about setting goals in January but what about now?!? Take time to sit down and set some goals for you and your kids for the school year – have your kids set their own goals not your goals for them!!

August is upon us!

I cannot believe that it is already August!  Where did our summer go?!? Considering that the beginning of school is right around the corner and my head is still on a beach somewhere, I am thinking that maybe others are feeling the same way. So, we have put together some articles to draw you back in – slowly, I promise. We hope that they may be of interest to you as it relates to you and your children. (BTW, you can still read them on the beach!)
