“A friend is someone who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”

“A friend is someone who walks in when the rest of the world walks out.”

-Unknown

There are times in your life when you are able to reflect upon who the true friends in your life are – whether it is a traumatic experience, a truly joyous moment or the little things that you want to share that you know that particular friend will just “get.” What makes us have these thoughts about certain people in our lives? What is a true friend? Have you thought about the qualities in a friendship that are important to you?

I have been fortunate in my life to find friends that despite the distance between us and our inability to talk every day or even every week, our friendship is strong. They are the people that I know would be on my doorstep tomorrow if I called them and said that I needed them. To me, that says something for what is truly important in a friend, because I know to get to that point in a friendship we have developed over time a mutual trust, loyalty, kindness and love for one another – all qualities of a true friend. At My Remarkable Self we discuss with our students what qualities they think are important in a friend and why, and it never ceases to amaze us how thoughtful they are about what they view as important. As you talk to your children and help them navigate situations with their friends, help them to understand what the qualities of a true friend are and why they are important. This will benefit them throughout their lives as to who they surround themselves with and whose advice and opinions they will seek when they need guidance or help.

Check out or reread our blogs on our Friendship Archive as we talk about being a “Friendship” role model for your child, our “I AM, I CAN, I WILL” challenge and the rock star girls who reminded us what kindness truly is.
