The Happiness Resolution

Posted on Affirmation, Feelings, General January 6, 2016 by Mary George

This is the time of the year when we reflect upon the past and think towards the new year and what we would like to accomplish in the next 12 months. Every year my goals or resolutions tend to be in the same vain – family, health, friendships, travel and work. (See “Making Resolutions With Your Children”) While setting these particular goals are wonderful and very needed for me, this year I have been thinking a lot more about what truly makes me happy and what I can do to be happier in my day-to-day life. This definitely has taken a lot of personal soul searching but what I have discovered is that just taking each day as it comes and enjoying and consciously appreciating the moments is what I need to focus on. I know, I know, this is the old adage, “carpe diem,” but there is a reason for it. As a new year begins and times passes, my children grow older and life takes many twists and turns, never knowing what it holds. What I do know is that it is in my control to laugh more, love more and enjoy the gifts that I have been given. So my resolution for this year is to strive to find joy and happiness in the everyday moments.

As you are thinking about what your New Year’s resolutions are for 2016 consider what makes you happy and gives you enjoyment and DO IT!!

Happy New Year!

Happiness through Giving Back

Posted on Affirmation, General December 24, 2015 by Mary George

Needless to say during the holiday season life gets hectic – from decorating your house, to Christmas cards, to deciding what to give friends and family to baking and cooking and holiday parties. It makes my head spin just thinking about the craziness. So where does teaching our children about the true spirit of the holidays come in? I have thought about that a lot this year as they are getting older and more aware that Christmas is not only about Santa Claus and presents. Throughout their childhood we have worked to help them understand, amidst the chaos, about giving to others and spending time with family and friends.

Every year we try to give our time to a program such as “Christmas Cheer” or “Toys for Tots.” This year we worked with a program to fill a backpack for someone who is homeless. Each member of our family put in some of their own money and then we all went and bought the necessary items. I was not expecting the buying of the items to create such interesting conversation with our children. They were curious why we needed to put certain things in the backpack and why we were not adding others. It was truly eye opening for them. And not only was a good experience for them in terms of giving but also in learning to appreciate their lives and how helping others is essential in our world. Giving and helping others also helps to create a sense of happiness inside. Helping our children to find happiness is the most wonderful gift of all.

Happy Holidays!
